Eddie couldn’t give me a lot of information this morning. He was still waiting on a call from Miles’s attorney, but he did give me exactly what I needed.

Terrance’s business card. He’d gotten it from the store, right before the police car drove off with my boyfriend inside, and he handed it over to me stealthily this morning, without a word. I knew why, too. If I caused any trouble today, he didn’t want to know about it. He couldn’t be any more associated with this mess than he already was—not if he had any chance of helping Miles.

Now I’m sitting in this quiet hotel suite, nursing a cold cup of coffee. Everyone else left early to catch the first flight back to L.A. No one mentioned the fact we were supposed to be on the bus on our way to Florida today. That show’d been cancelled, along with the one after. The lost shows were a silent disappointment we all shared—even me. But nobody brought it up. I’m trying to keep my hopes high that everything will be fixed soon, but the feeling in my gut says otherwise.

The clock on the wall says it’s ten, and my ride should be waiting downstairs by now. The faster I get things done here in Atlanta, the faster I can be home. It’s surreal. I didn’t want to take this trip to begin with, and yet it feels weird that I’ll be in my own bed tonight. I’ll get to scratch Chord’s ears and drink wine with Dee. I should be happy, but it feels like another life.

Okay, the self-pity party has officially ended. I stand up, lift my head higher, and take a deep breath. I clean out my coffee mug and collect my bag and the blue guitar. I can do this. It’s just one more job.

Leaving the suite behind, I say a silent goodbye to my new life. With so much uncertainty ahead of me and Miles and the band, who knows if my blossoming rock star life will continue?

A black sedan idles out front. I climb into the backseat and give him the address on Terrance’s business card, ignoring the pounding in my chest. Pretending I’ve got nerves of steel, I sit up straight and try to think of exactly what to say when I’m face-to-face with Terrance. But there’s not enough time to rehearse. It feels like I merely blinked and we’re here. We stop right in front of a record shop, and I realize I’m probably sitting in the same spot Miles was in when he was escorted into the police car. The anger floods back through me, and I’m no longer afraid of confronting Terrance. I let my impulses take the lead and march into the store, expecting to see him as soon as I walk in. Instead, it’s some younger guy, so I slow my gait and force a smile.

“Hi. Is Terrance Young in?”

He gives me a once over and raises an eyebrow. “Yeah. He’s in the back.
